The Congregation of the Handmaids of Christ and its Educational Ministry
The Sisters of the Congregation of the Handmaids of Christ express their charism thrust through four main ministries. Right from the origins of the Congregation, it has developed its focus on Social Ministry reaching out to the orphans, poor girls, destitute women and the aged, Education Ministry with Schools, Pastoral Ministry with Catechism, family visits, and care of the church, and Health Ministry with dispensary and taking care of the sick. The Founder Msgr. Herculano Gonsalves, felt that he has a special call for the orphans, destitute women and the aged. This preferential option today demands that we as Handmaids of Christ reach out to the socially and economically marginalized girls and women in India through education, health, pastoral and social ministries.
Education as Mission
The Handmaids of Christ Sisters are strongly convinced that their mission is to reach out to the poor and liberate them. They find their vocational fulfilment in engaging themselves in the struggles of the poor for justice. The focus is envisaged in integrating all the ministries towards a just society in building up the Kingdom. This mission is primarily exercised in the education of the young, particularly of the poor.
Lack of opportunities in Goa for the poor girls to get educated inspired the Founder Msgr. Herculano Gonsalves to start the service of education.
